A new report from ThreatTrack Security suggests that things will improve dramatically in 2015—that is, unless the survey participants are overstating the efficacy of their network defenses. An old quirk in Windows is going away with the release of Windows 10. Microsoft has revealed that the upcoming release of Windows 10 will include a change that makes the Windows NT kernel jump to version 10.0. While Windows 8.1 was Windows NT 6.3 and Windows 7 was Windows NT 6.1, the numbering scheme will now match both the version and marketing names. Windows 10 Technical Preview builds are currently identified as Windows NT 6.4, but future builds will include the change, and Chinese site ITHome leaked images showing the 10.0 version of Windows 10 last week. The odd numbering scheme originates from Microsoft’s merging of NT and DOS-based versions of Windows. It left software like Windows 2000 with the 5.0 version number after years of Windows 2.0, 3.0, 3.11, and 4.0 releases eventually merging alongside versions like Windows 95 and 98. But a hard drive is much slower than RAM, so it can really hurt performance. (I discuss SSDs below.) Some basics: Your PC has storage—a hard drive or SSD—and memory in the form of RAM chips. RAM is faster than storage, and you have much less of it. It’s also more volatile: Shut off the power, and everything in RAM disappears. You can think of RAM as the immediate workspace, and storage as the file cabinet. When you save a file, you’re copying it from RAM to storage. When there’s no room in RAM for that program or file you’re trying to load, virtual memory kicks in. Some of the code and data in RAM goes to the swap file, making room to load something else. Music streaming services can eat into your data plan, but T-Mobile just lightened the load for music and video lovers.  T-Mobile has added Google Play Music, Soundcloud, and Xbox Music among 14 new music streaming services that work with T-Mobile’s Music Freedom plan. For users with an eligible phone plan , any music streamed from a supported service won’t count toward their data cap. Spotify, Rdio, Pandora, and several other streaming apps are already on board. In August, T-Mobile said it was working  to add Google Play Music , as it topped a subscriber poll of most-wanted services. The network says it doesn’t charge providers to participate in Music Freedom, so T-Mobile likely delayed the rollout until it had built enough capacity to accommodate its subscribers' jam sessions. ust like a sports team axing its coach after a poor season, Samsung may be ousting the head of its mobile division. According to the Wall street Journal, co-CEO J.K. Shin may be replaced by B.K. Yoo, another co-CEO who oversees Samsung’s home appliance and television businesses. This would put him in charge of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone line, which includes the Galaxy S5 , Galaxy Note 4, and a large portfolio of other devices. Shin led Samsung’s rise to dominance of the Android phone ecosystem. Yet the Galaxy S5 significantly underperformed, selling 40 percent fewer Galaxy S5 models than the Galaxy S4. Samsung’s market share also dipped in the last year, dropping from nearly 33 percent to 25 percent. The shakeup is still a rumor at this point, so we can’t say for sure whether Shin will lose his job or who would take over.
